Booklet 3G is poor under sunshine

The glossy screen is not very readable outdoors. It folds to almost 180 degrees, it has a great resolution for its size, but what is the point of having a 12 hours autonomy and GPS if you can’t work well outdoors?

Nokia Booklet 3G has only 1 GB of memory, not upgradeable

Running Windows XP or Linux, the Nokia Laptop would probably be forgiven. But Windows 7 and 1GB of RAM? Not upgradeable? That’s odd, and not a good investment time wise. Think of the bundled applications and your favorite software and imagine how would it work crumped in 1GB of RAM. Maybe this is a commercial decision, leaving room for other models. Maybe it’s just cutting costs to the max.

Much of the video they’re trying to connect to 3G, which is not working. This Nokia laptop was a UK version demo, so the US 3G was not available.
The viewing angle is not so great, but OK for regular use. The looks are also a plus for the tiny Booklet 3G and Windows 7 contributes to that. Unfortunately, it’s not so quick to respond to commands.
The touchpad supports two finger gestures (multitouch).

Nokia Booklet 3G buyers can pay it spending €249 upfront and then €20 per month over 24 months. There is also an optional flat rate data tariff of €25 per month. There are no more details, and no launch date for the rest of the world. Remember, in Italy you can already preorder it and Nokia Booklet 3G will be sold in the US by Best Buy. A lot cheaper than in Europe.

Still, there is good news. The Nokia Booklet 3G price will be $599. There is a lot less than the first estimates of $800 and it might give a boost to sales.

We know that laptops are cheaper in US, but this is an important price decision. Maybe Nokia fears the competition from Asus, Dell or Acer that already promise same battery life and better specifications on their next notebooks. Looking at Nokia Booklet specifications, there are some neat features that might give Nokia a head before the pack. But this advantage is not one to last long, and Nokia should quickly make a partnership with a large carrier to avoid engaging  into a price war.

The Nokia Booklet 3G is not exactly an Iphone of the netbook market, so it should not be promoted as a netbook, but as something else. They should concentrate on the business market and hit deep.

The bad news is the price and the availability date. 699 euro is a lot even taking into consideration the highlights of this laptop. And there is still a whole month ahead till the end of October.

Hope that the first customers will not be disappointed, otherwise Nokia Booklet 3G might prove to be a giant marketing mistake. And remember, it is supposed to be Nokia’s first step into conquering the netbook market.

I don’t know if this is the final version of the box, but it doesn’t look premium. Hope it will not go in retail with that box. I know the most of us will recycle the box shortly after buying the Nokia netbook, but still, we’re talking about spending 800 freakin’ bucks, and not for a cheap Chinese replica. I like simple designs like the ones promoted by Apple. But Apple boxes look great, not cheap.

Almost all the major case providers are jumping on the new Nokia laptop wave. Sure, it’s very easy to take your regular 10.1″ case and rebrand it stating it’s a Nokia Booklet 3G case.
